Here is a note desired by collectors! This is a 1935A North Africa Silver Certificate graded Gem CU 66 (Gem Crisp Uncirculated ) by Paper Money Guaranty (PMG). World War II ushered in the printing of specialized military currency to provide economic stability for the U.S. dollar in occupied countries. This coin shows George Washington on the front with brown seal with the American Seal and Pyramid on the back featuring the North African overprint.
In North Africa, the Treasury Department replaced all U.S. currency with special issue notes as a precautionary measure in the event of a German victory. Had the German's prevailed in Africa, this currency would have become useless and declared void. The first use George Washington's portrait on $1 notes was on Series 1869 United States Notes and continues up to today.
Since the local economies were in ruins and a soldier might be in England one day and North Africa the next, the only way to pay a soldier would be in U.S. dollars. The problem was that large sums of cash could be captured by the enemy and used to supply their troops. The solution in the North African theater was to issue $1, $5 and $10 Silver Certificates with a yellow seal instead of the familiar blue seal.
This note has a quality (GRADE) rating of 66 out of 70 (This quality (GRADE) rating comes from the Sheldon scale on the theory that a "70" would be worth seventy times as much as a "one").
