This is part of the modern Silver Commemorative series released from the United States Mint over the last 22 years and has a denomination of one dollar. In 1997 the United States to commemorate the life and work of Jackie Robinson, former baseball player, a civil rights leader and political activist.

The obverse (front) of the coin depicts Robinson stealing home plate, as he did during a 1955 World Series between the New York Yankees and the Brooklyn Dodgers while the reverse (back) of the coin features the Jackie Robinson Foundation's 50th anniversary logo of Robinson's breaking the color barrier in Major League Baseball, surrounded by inscriptions highlighting two of Robinson's other achievements: "Rookie of the Year 1947," and "Hall of Fame 1962."

An identical 50th anniversary commemorative patch was also worn by all Major League Baseball players during the 1997 season. This coin has a quality (GRADE) rating of 69 out of 70 (This quality (GRADE) rating comes from the Sheldon scale on the theory that a "70" would be worth seventy times as much as a "one").     About Jackie Robinson:
    Jack Roosevelt Robinson was born in Cairo, Georgia, on January 31, 1919, the youngest of five children of Jerry and Mallie Robinson. He grew up in Pasadena, California and lettered in football, baseball, basketball and track at UCLA. He was widely regarded as the finest all-around athlete in the United States at that time.

    After three years in the Army, he played with the Kansas City Monarchs of the American Negro Leagues in 1945. Later that year, in a historic move that ended decades of discrimination against blacks in baseball, he signed a contract with the Brooklyn Dodgers organization. After a successful season in 1946 with its farm club, the Montreal Royals, he became the first black player in the Major Leagues since the nineteenth century.

    Strike: The act of stamping a coin.

    Truncation: The bottom edge of a portrait or bust.

    Wheat penny: Lincoln cents issued from 1909 to 1958 bearing the wheat ear design on the reverse.
