Wedgwood Virgil #2 Jasperware Plaque

"First brought out in the 1787 catalog, this was first shown. It depicts the great Roman poet Virgil. He has beautiful angels around him, and a captive audience as he reads his poetry. This is truly a collector's piece. While we love our Wedgwood bowls and platters, plaques are beautiful jewelry for our home. It comes with a golden gilded frame." --Wedgwood's Jorge Perez

Bring a touch of rich history into your home with this plaque. Crafted from sophisticated jasperware, the plaque features the iconic cornflower blue background and white relief. The piece is framed in a golden frame and surrounded by a dark blue mat. The plaque portrays the great Roman poet Virgil, surrounded by angels and a captive audience. One of the greatest Roman epic poets, Virgil is best known for three major works, the "Eclogues" (or "Bucolics"), the "Georgics" and the "Aeneid." Creating an atmosphere of grace and grandeur in your household, the heirloom-quality style of the plaque is worthy of passing down through generations.

About Jasperware:
The most famous and prized of all Josiah Wedgwood's inventions is jasperware, which has been produced for more than 200 years. Available in a variety of colors, the unglazed vitreous body of jasperware provides the perfect background for various classic scenes in bas-relief. Its name derives from the fact that the material resembles the natural stone jasper.

Emphasizing Wedgwood's attention to the finest details, commitment to superior quality and presentation, jasperware was originally developed in the 1770s and continues to be a favorite with collectors worldwide. There were thousands of recorded trials, hopes raised and dashed, before Wedgwood was pleased with his new finely-grained stoneware. Jasperware is capable of "receiving colors through its whole surface, in a manner which no other body, ancient or modern has been known to do". Wedgwood felt it was one of his greatest achievements. Subtle and sophisticated, the Wedgwood jasperware collection features a specially polished matte finish to give a finer texture to the surface. Wedgwood jasperware offers extensive gifting and collecting choices, as well as the liberty to enhance a home with classic pieces that are beautiful and useful.

Care Instructions:
Use a soft lint free cloth to remove surface dust using care around the relief. If necessary, wash with mild soap and hot water using care around relief. Do not soak your jasperware or put it in the dishwasher.
