About Sleeping Beauty Turquoise
In 1975, the Sleeping Beauty Mine opened in Globe, Arizona. The mine was named after the mountain where it is located, which has the look of a woman sleeping. Turquoise is only found near copper deposits. While copper gives the stone its distinct blue color, additional iron in the stone makes the stone more green. The turquoise mined from Sleeping Beauty, however, is rare because it has very little iron content and therefore has a distinct robin’s egg blue color.
The Sleeping Beauty Mine also yielded a unique turquoise stone that didn't have the typical matrix or inclusions found in most turquoise. The material had a clean and consistent complexion, making it an anomaly in the turquoise world. While the color compared to the old Persian mines in Iran, this new material was clean inside, making it a unique deposit. The mine took little time to burst onto the scene and quickly became the signature look for the market. Today, Sleeping Beauty turquoise is the benchmark for quality turquoise in both color and consistency.
