Choosing a Mattress
Anatomy Of A Mattress
Since you will spend about one-third of your life in bed, buying a mattress is a decision that should be carefully thought out. While subjective, comfort is the single-most important factor to bed buyers. Support and durability rank close behind.
Most mattress sets have three major components:
Comfort- Comfort in a mattress comes from the foams and fibers used in the upholstery layers above the innerspring. Special fibers and responsive body-conforming foams ease pressure points along the body, reducing tossing and turning and giving you a better night's sleep. The old thinking was that beds had to be hard to be good for your back. The truth is that the modern foams and fibers used in today's premium mattresses actually enhance the support of the mattress, and are more comfortable as well.
Support- The innerspring provides the support for the mattress. Innerspring units offer a number of different "coil counts", the number of coils in the mattress. The coil count and wire thickness (or gauge) determine how much support the innerspring offers and its ability to evenly distribute weight. The thickness of the coil wire in the innerspring and the number of coils determine the surface coverage and support the mattress will offer you. Serta’s innerspring has double-tempered steel coils for maximum support.
Durability- The foundation is the base of the sleep set and works in unison with the mattress to provide proper support and durability. The foundation is designed to complement the performance of the mattress. Purchasing just the mattress, without the foundation, reduces the overall durability of the set. All Serta mattress sets purchased from ShopNBC come complete with a matching box spring.
Mattress Types
Firm- A firm mattress is designed with a layer of cushion on top; however, it will not be as soft as a plush, pillowtop, or Eurotop mattress. People with lower back pain often prefer beds that are firmer - stating that the firm padding prevents their body from sinking into an uncomfortable position.
Plush- Plush mattresses are a great choice when you and your partner differ on your mattress firmness preferences. A plush mattress is more padded than a firm, but not as cushioned as a pillowtop or Eurotop.
Pillowtop- If you’ve ever added a mattress pad to your bedding, you will probably enjoy sleeping on a pillowtop mattress. Designed with an attached pad, a pillowtop mattress provides the comfort you need with the cushioned softness similar to a featherbed.
Eurotop- Eurotop mattresses are designed with a layer of cushioning incorporated into the top, rather than the gusseted featherbed design of a pillowtop. The gentle cushioning found in a Eurotop mattress may be preferred by people suffering from painful joints.

Features:
FireBlocker® System - The FireBlocker® system is a proprietary system of mattress protection that gives consumers critical time to escape and call for help in case of a fire. This advanced safety system is located among the outer layers of the mattress and box spring, and it contains no harmful chemicals. A precise blend of fibers, FireBlocker isolates the impact of a fire and resists its spread into the mattress.
Advanced Comfort Quilt with FireBlocker® – For the next generation of comfort feature, enjoy Serta’s Advanced Comfort Quilt. This comfort comes with peace of mind, because Serta’s new FireBlocker system is seamlessly integrated into the Comfort Quilt design.
Benefits of Advanced Comfort Quilt:
Rolling peaks of convoluted foam and fluffy fibers provide gentle cushioning for the body. Five zones of convoluted foam provide better comfort and support where the body needs them most.
The combination of convoluted foam and fiber disperses weight and helps to improve circulation in the shoulders, arms and hips.
Better circulation in these critical pressure areas means less tossing and turning for a more restful, comfortable night’s sleep.
Continuous Support® Innerspring - The human body curves from head to foot, with areas that need proper support while we sleep. Serta’s Continuous Support Innerspring contours to the body, providing correct and balanced support to the entire body.
Benefits of Continuous Support Innerspring:
Rows of continuous wire coils run from head-to-toe, providing support along the entire length of the body.
Serta’s continuous coils provide balanced support to the body, rather than forcing the body to conform to the mattress. This helps maintain natural spinal alignment.
Because the coil rows run head-to-toe, they respond to each sleeper individually and help reduce the effects of one partner’s movements on another.
Foam Encasement- Only Serta offers the edge support of an advanced, Total Edge® foam encasement design in select Perfect Sleeper models. This system helps reduce edge “fall off” and extends the sleeping surface of your mattress. This durable design provides lasting strength and enhances tailoring strength and integrity of the innerspring.
Benefits of Serta’s unique foam encasement:
Extends the sleeping surface all the way to the edge, helping to eliminate edge roll-off.
Increases seating edge support with its exclusive corner locking system
Working in conjunction with the foundation, this new foam encasement system helps to reduce side-to-side mattress movement and minimizes the impact of one sleeper’s movements on another.
StabL-Base® Double Beam® Foundation- The StabL-Base Double Beam foundation provides consistent support across the bottom of the mattress and lasting durability to the entire sleep set. The unique V-shaped construction of the support structure isolates the impact of one sleep partner’s movements on another. Serta’s exclusive design dramatically reduces mattress sway. The foundation and foam encasement provide stable support from the edges, reducing side sway.
