Evolution of the Ruffle
Small fabric ruffles first appeared at the drawstring necklines of chemises and shirts in the 15th century. During the 16th century the ruff was born in Western Europe; a ruff was a separately constructed piece of clothing worn around the neck and used to keep the wearer's doublet from becoming soiled. Ruffs eventually fell out of fashion in favor of collars, but various modifications of the ruffle have remained a fashionable form of trim off-and-on during modern times.
