History of Kimonos
Although traditionally known as the national costume of Japan, the earliest kimono were heavily influenced by traditional Chinese clothing - known as Hanfu today - through extensive Chinese culture adoptions by Japan. During the 8th century, Chinese fashions came into style among the Japanese, and the overlapping collar became particularly a women's fashion. During the next 1000 years the kimono became more stylized and the sleeves began to grow in length. The Obi "belt" became wider, with various styles of tying coming into fashion.
