Sweet Romance™ RetroMex Gold-tone Mayan Cross Necklace

This Mayan cross, created for ShopNBC, took months to find the best combination of beads for the design.

Designed in a rich gold-tone, this textured necklace features a large turquoise, red, green, and black enamel detailed cross pendant with an ornate floral bail. You'll also find that the necklace is strung with a variety of colored rondell crystal beads, each with interior swirl patterns. The multi-strand necklace measures 15"L x 1/2"W with a 5"L extender. The cross pendant measures 3-5/16"L x 3/3/16"W and can be removed and placed on another necklace of your choice. Hand made in the U.S.A.

Background Story
Even before the arrival of Christianity in the Yucatan, the Maya revered the symbol of the cross as their Tree of Life. As the two cultures converged in the 1500s, the Maya retained traditions from their own understanding of the cosmos. Yet, they embraced the cross as a medium through which a person could awaken their spirit, invoke blessings and receive divine inspiration. It has been centuries, but remarkably, almost miraculously, the Maya continue to dwell in the Yucatan and Guatemala. The sculptural, polychrome facades of their ancient buildings and their color-drenched weaving continue to infuse daily life with a sense of the spiritual. My cross design is born of that world. Colors of the earth are expressed in stunning metalwork and colorful crystal beads, each made by hand in the lampworking process. Many artists have put their hands to the creation of your necklace or cuff. May it bring you joy and inspiration.

Complete the look with the matching bracelet J406000.

Please note the length of the necklace extends up to 20"L due to the extender.

Created / Simulated Gem

Created/Simulated Stones:

How are created or simulated gemstones different from natural gemstones? Natural gemstones are created by the forces of nature and must be discovered, usually by digging in the ground or sifting through a riverbed. Most of these natural gemstones can also be created in a laboratory; they are called created or simulated gemstones. They can be physically—in mineral and chemical contents—identical to their naturally occurring counterparts.

The purpose of creating gemstones in a laboratory isn’t necessarily to reduce the costs, but rather to produce larger, more perfectly formed stones. Because even lab-created diamonds can be very expensive, there are some diamond alternatives on the market that are commonly used to give jewelry the look of authentic diamonds, but which are much less costly. Cubic zirconia and Signity Star® are examples of lab-created gemstones that, to the unaided eye, look identical to natural diamonds.
