Acetate is a resilient, wrinkle-resistant fabric that drapes nicely. It can be made into fibers of different diameters and woven into fabrics that resemble silk. Acetate dries fast, resists shrinkage and does not absorb moisture easily. Not a strong fiber, acetate should usually be dry-cleaned. Some acetate garments, however, are washable. These are usually knits. If laundering care is recommended on the care label, here is how to clean acetate:

  • Wash the garment by hand in warm water with a mild soap.
  • Do not soak items with a color dye.
  • Do not twist or wring the garment.
  • While the garment is damp, press it on the wrong side with a cool iron. Use a pressing cloth to finish the right side.
  • Lay circular knits flat to dry.
  • Avoid putting the garment in contact with acetone and some other solvents, such as nail polish remover and perfumes.
