The Colors of the Rainbow
Known as one of the most spectacular light shows on Earth, the rainbow displays seven colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. Made of all the colors of the visible spectrum, or white light, the colors of the rainbow appear when white light is bent through a prism. Various cultures throughout the world view the rainbow with different symbolism. In religion and art, the rainbow often symbolizes God's promise of mercy to mankind after the Deluge (Gen. 9.13). The Greeks and Romans viewed the rainbow as the sign of Iris, messenger of the gods, and the Inca and other Native Americans regarded it as a gift from the sun-god. And, of course, there are the fairy tales that tell us there is a pot of gold at the end of each rainbow!
